FOR YOUTH SWIMMERS 4-18 YEARS OF AGE, YEARLY, FROM MAY – JULY,
Lakewood Waves Swim Team
The Lakewood Waves is a summer recreation team for swimmers ages 4-18 of all skill levels. We are a parent run organization with a focus on developing swimmers to reach a competitive level in a fun friendly environment. To join the team, swimmers need to swim the length of the pool (25 yards) during our tryout. Families do not need to be LPOA members to join our team
.
We open registration mid-April and begin practice at the end of May. Our season lasts through mid-July. We do not require a set number of practices and meets but encourage our families to attend as many practices and meets that will fit into their schedule for consistency and development.
** New 2024 swimmers can try-out on May 21st OR May 23rd at 6:00PM **
Required Gear: Goggles are required at practice and meets. We have a limited number for purchase at the pool.
Early Registration Deadline is May 31st. Each swimmer must be registered separately.

Swim Practice Levels
Our practices are divided by levels. We have 4 different levels: Snappers, Swells, Riptides and Tidal Waves. Our groups are not based on age, but rather by what kind of practice each swimmer needs, but occasionally age is taken into account. Our coaches can help decide which group your child needs to practice with. These groups are not permanent, as your child progresses, the coaches will talk to you about moving to a different group.
Snappers–This group is learning the fundamentals of each stroke as well as how to breath, kick, dive and the rules of meet swimming. The majority of practice is focused on breaking down the strokes and will be done mostly in the shallow end. Most brand new swimmers start here.
Swells– This group is learning fundamentals of each stroke and working on swimming them consistently. They have more confidence in the pool and can swim for longer periods of time. They will do all of their practice in the lanes. This group will also practice race starts.
Riptides– This group knows all 4 strokes, but are still working on them. Practices are focused on technique, strength and perfecting the strokes. Some stroke instruction is given, drills are common and often one stroke at a time is given primary focus at a practice. This is also where turns are typically introduced as most swimmers in this category are getting close to competing in 50m heats.
Tidal Waves-This group is our advanced group. They are well-versed in all 4 strokes and are primarily focused on speed and endurance. Practice consists of lots of drills, lots of distance and little to no stroke instruction. It is assumed these swimmers can swim at least 100m without resting and are expected to do much more. They are also expected to do flip turns.
Suits and caps: Your child may swim in any suit they are comfortable in that is appropriate. Team suits are not required but encouraged. If you would like to purchase a team suit, please do so as early as possible. They often take 4-6 weeks to get in. Click the link below: LAKEWOOD WAVES SWIM SUITS
Swim Caps are also not required but are very helpful to most swimmers. Hair can often interfere with correct stroke execution. Team caps are available for purchase.
